Cardboard Boat Races

The Cardboard Boat Races challenge students in elementary, middle and secondary school grades to use teamwork, numeracy, literacy and problem solving skills to create their own floating race vessels.  This highly sought after program is offered in different locations each year.

Objective

Students, armed with duct tape and cardboard, construct vessels that will float and carry a minimum of 1 passenger. Each team will have 2 hours to complete boat construction, after which the teams race their boats across a pool. To add to the challenge, teams whose boats ‘survive’ the race, will then compete in a weight category; testing the weight bearing capacity of their vessels. Teams will earn additional points for overall design, safety, and team work.
