Surrey Schools students flex trade skills to qualify for provincials

Surrey students who recently took the top spots in the Lower Fraser Valley Skills Canada Regional Competition are now gearing up for the provincials.

Eighteen students and student teams competing in 13 skills categories will make the trip to the TRADEX in Abbotsford on April 17 for the provincial championships. There they will face off against students from across B.C. in competitions designed to show off their skills in areas like carpentry, mechanics, graphic design and welding.

“From there, anyone that earns a gold will receive an invitation to participate in the Skills Canada National Competition,” said Martin Lim, Career Development Facilitator at Fraser Heights Secondary.

The 2024 national competition will take place in Québec City at the end of May.

In order to qualify for the provincials, students won a combination of gold and silver medals at the regional competition, held over a three-week period from late February to mid-March. While most of the competitions are for secondary students, a team from Erma Stephenson Elementary qualified in the Junior Skills Spaghetti Bridge building competition.
